Interview – Jeremy Jordan is originating the role of charismatic bad boy Clyde Barrow in Bonnie and Clyde the Musical, but like Kevin he didn’t expect to live his life as an actor. From the beginning Jeremy could sing and his Mom suggested he audition for shows at the community theater, but his first auditions were “horrible” and he “couldn’t even get cast in Peter Pan or Oliver Twist.” But he didn’t mind because he was a really good student and thought he was going to be an engineer. Just before his junior year in high school Jeremy attended a prestigious conference to jump-start his engineering career and realized that he had no interest in the field. As he says, “when you go for your career and return remembering only a couple of pretty faces, you know something is wrong.” Not knowing what he was going to do with his life Jeremy let life lead him. He sang in chorus in school and was heard by someone who offered him a role in a play. Jeremy was hooked and knew that this was the life he was meant for. And it must be true because at 26 he’s already had staring roles in Grease and West Side Story and now, as Clyde Barrow, he is almost certainly going to find himself on Broadway again – this time creating the role he’s playing.

Interview –Kevin Massey is originating the role of Ken – the good guy – in Bonnie and Clyde the Musical – which is playing at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota and expected to go to Broadway very soon, but Kevin never intended to be a performer. Like the rest of his family he was “very musical” but no one thought of “doing it for a living.” Really good in school, Kevin liked and did well in math and science, even attending college as a pre-med major. But even though he was told that “if you’re good in school why would you throw your life away a performer,” life kept letting Kevin know that performing was definitely his path. Arriving in New York (just for a year off) a month before 911, Kevin “instantly became a New Yorker” and a series of happenstances cemented his choice (at least for now) to pursue a career as an actor. In a very short while Kevin was a working actor, winning a role in Big River as his Broadway Debut and now almost certainly destined to return to Broadway in Bonnie and Clyde.

Discussion – In this show I am recapping the concepts of Cover Story and Undercover. I explain that it can be dangerous to begin to recover denied parts of ourselves and I describe The Growing Edge, off of which we must leap whenever we attempt new behavior.

Interview – David Brunetti says he was “just musical.” When their church gave David’s family the piano they were replacing, he simply sat down and began to “pick out songs.” His musical ability came easily and naturally but he majored in acting in university. And although he wanted to be “Al Pacino,” David just kept getting jobs a musical director. Finally realizing that he could combine his two talents, David created his coaching practice called Acting Songs. He wrote a book about his technique and while he is based in New York, David now teaches all over the world. In addition every year here is invited to teach a master class in “acting songs” at the Asolo Repertory Theatre in Sarasota FL.

Songs from the brand new musical Bonnie and Clyde, which it is hoped is headed from its run at the Asolo in Sarasota right to Broadway – A cast album has not yet been recorded so these songs don’t exist anywhere else, hear them before any one else. Also see photos from the Asolo production.

This show is dedicated to the memory of Charlie Prawdzik, a musician’s musician. Looking more like an accountant than a jazz musician, when Charlie sat down at the piano you had no doubt that the music was going directly from his soul to his fingers. Able to play pretty much any song, in style, tempo or key Charlie made virtuosity look easy. And if you were a singer you wanted no one but Charlie backing you up. Born and raised in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, Ghafir Akbar, thought acting was a nice hobby, he and some friends “put on a show” for fun, but a director saw it and asked Ghafir to audition for a play he was casting. Ghafir did and got his first acting role. Still he accepted a scholarship and spent 3 years at a prestigious university studying engineering, until realizing where his passion really was. Listen to the way life kept offering acting to Ghafir and the courage it took to leave school and follow his passion.

Interview – Yaima Franco was only interested in her school studies and not the ballet class her parents took her to at age 8. At age 13, however, she realized that “she could do this” and so began an interest that grew into a passion. At 18 she auditioned for the Cuba Nation Ballet Co, where only 2 would be chosen. Yaima was told that she was great but had to lose 15 pounds in a month. She did this by eating only fruit and tea. Octavio Martin is a principal dancer in the Sarasota Ballet Company, but before he could find his way to Sarasota, Octavio first had to escape (with his wife – whose story you will hear next week) from the clutches of the Cuban Ballet Co. • Interview – Margaret Barbieri’s journey to her destiny – a life of ballet – began ironically at the Dr’s office. Thought to be a sickly child of 5, her mother took her to a Dr. who prescribed exercise, and suggested ballet. Margaret’s mother had never heard of ballet, but dutifully found a class for Margaret, and in that class Margaret found her life’s passion. Listen to the series of happenstances which – without much activity on Margaret’s part – led her inexorably to the life she “was meant to live.”

Kate Alexander is not only assistant Artistic Director of the Florida Studio Theater, but an extremely talented actor and director. She was not an outgoing or precocious child and says that no one would have expected her to become an actress. Even in college where she majored in drama her teachers “didn’t know what to do with her.” But although she couldn’t say exactly why, Kate had decided at age 8 that the stage was her destiny, and difficult and discouraging as her path was, Kate knew she had to travel it, and it has brought her to where she always wanted to – and knew she should be.

Richard Hopkins has been the very successful Artistic Director of Florida Studio Theater in Sarasota FL for 30 years, but he didn’t see a play until he was 19. Coasting through college with no idea what he wanted to do with his life until a speech teacher told him he would get a better grade if he helped build sets, this led to taking a drama class and he was “hooked!” He had found his “window to the world.” And then, as he says he does everything, Richard became “obsessed,” and “followed his bliss” wherever it took him – even when the conventional wisdom said that path was a dead end.

Mark Neuenschwander is an extremely talented, very well respected, successful working musician. Ironically he never expected to live a life dedicated to music. It seemed to sneak up on him. Self effacing, Mark says over and over that he wasn’t born to do this. Continually told how smart he was, Mark believed he had to be an engineer or a physicist or a combination of both, but music just kept getting in the way. Mark’s is the story of a man who kept trying to be what they told him he should be, but who kept bumping his head against what he actually is – until finally realizing and allowing himself to embrace what he is, and enjoy the “tremendous” joy of doing what he loves to do and getting paid for it.

September 7, 2010 Jay Poindexter

Jay Poindexter is a performer but he didn’t know it. A “good kid” he did what was expected of him. He participated in extra curricular activities, like band and gymnastics, but had no idea what he wanted to do with his life. Although he was cast as the prince in a grade school production of Cinderella, Jay remembers that “he didn’t mind it.” Later in high school “on a whim” he auditioned for The Gollywogs, a company of players who entertained at the local Mall, but this too didn’t capture him. When his band director encouraged him to audition for the senior musical; Guys and Dolls and he was cast as Nicely Nicely, “something sparked.” He knew what he was meant to do, but the path wasn’t simple. First he had to honor his step-father’s request to enter military service – it didn’t work. And finally Jay was able to endure the disapproval of his parents and step parents and be who he is. Listen to this inspiring story and especially the hilarious recounting of his audition for Cats – his very first real acting job.

This last interview is also the very first interview I did, with my good friend and extraordinary musician Michele Brourman –who is a musician’s musician. The poster child for ‘she came in with it,’ Michele was playing and singing by the time she was 3 years old. Having been captured by her music from the very beginning of her life Michele took hold of it and refused to let go. If there is anything that can be done with music, she can and does, do. it. Listen to her thoughtful and philosophical exploration of what it means to make a life with music, and sit back and enjoy several of the beautiful and haunting songs from her CD Fools and Little Children.
